Jenny Walker-Matott
Program Manager at Avenal State Prison
Jenny has burned for respect and dignity for all people since first learning about Harriet Tubman and the underground railroad as a young child. After spending a year in Argentina as a teacher and learning Spanish, she attended Cal Poly Humboldt (previously Humboldt State University) where she fell deeply in love with redwood forests and earned her B.A. in Religious Studies in 2005. Following the call that opened more deeply after the homebirth of her first child, Jenny launched her career in community education, a path that has led to many cherished experiences as a UCSD certificated lactation counselor, post-partum doula, reading specialist, restorative justice and social/emotional support staff to elementary-middle school students and before joining the Land Together team in winter of 2024, a conservation educator and curriculum development staff at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo.
Perhaps most influential in her development has been her 27 years of Buddhist practice and volunteer leadership in the international lay Buddhist org, Soka Gakkai International wherein she explores philosophy, mysticism, eco-spirituality, and broadens her compassionate advocacy through chanting and facilitating discussion meetings and study presentations in her local community.
When not at work, Jenny can most often be found on a trail, at home in the garden or reading a book, listening to jazz. And her most beloved place to be is anywhere with her 3 kids and husband, dog Millie and a baguette.
